The following are the comments posted with these pictures. " This first photo is a picture of the downy that was raining birch pieces down on us when we took the Hansen trail (Minnesota) looking for the black-backed woodpecker.

Today I was out following fox tracks in the new snow and I heard this pecking on this old dead birch.  I circled the tree and couldn't find him, but the pecking was very loud.  It finally dawned on me that the little guy was inside the tree doing his remodeling job of the hole he was punching in on the 24th.

If you look closely in the hole of the second photo, you will see his notched tail in the hole.... he is remodeling upside down.  I whistled and he stuck his head out to see who was disturbing his work.
